Roadside safety

What to do when your car breaks down on a Kenyan road

A calm, step-by-step checklist for the first ten minutes after a breakdown, from getting safe to getting help on the way.

A breakdown is stressful, but the first few minutes matter most. Acting in the right order keeps you and other road users safe and gets help to you faster.

1. Get the vehicle off the road

If the car is still moving, steer to the shoulder or the nearest safe spot away from traffic. Switch on your hazard lights straight away, even in daylight.

2. Make yourself visible

Place a warning triangle well behind the vehicle if you have one. On a bend or a hill, place it before the bend so approaching drivers see it in time.

3. Decide whether to stay in or get out

On a busy highway, passengers are usually safer standing well away from the road, behind a barrier if there is one. On a quiet road at night, staying locked in the car may feel safer. Use your judgement for the situation you are in.

4. Call for help and share your location

Open imergencyApp or call the 24/7 centre on +254 102 207022. Share your location and describe what happened, so we can match a provider to your exact need and you can track them live until they arrive.
